Hi Mike,
As Gandalf already mentioned, Linux and Winmodems don't share a very good
history together. I'm surprised that that is still the case.
When I was doing dial-up, my best luck was with an external modem through the
serial port.
I imagine they can be had cheap through NewEgg or Tigerdirect (or even some
smaller computer retailers).
Hope it eventually works out either way.
