Aye, a lot of people seem to complain about the sidebar in Unity. I'm also not a
fan of it.
You can install gnome-shell in ubuntu if not already installed, and if you are u
sing gdm choose "GNOME" instead of the Unity default. The default gnome shell do
es not have the sidebar.
You can also do away with it via gnome extensions.
