Waaay back in the day, when I had just graduated from 8-bit Ataris to my
first x86-based machine (an original 4.77MHz 8088, an Epson Equity I, if I
recall correctly), I was very disappointed to realize that I was still pretty
much stuck with DOS. Well, I mean I switched to 4DOS for awhile, and I think I
tried some other command.com alternatives that were a little better, but
seriously, 1 primary process? *BARF* So, my buddy that had been introducing
me to Linux (as well as the other linux proponents around) told me about Minix.
I snagged it, and was seriously amazed that it was all a microkernel
architecture. Tried to go a lot farther with it, but I fell into a 486slc2-66
not long after and just made the hop to Linux at that point. I always wanted
to get back into it, with a companion being Tannenbaum's text on operating
systems, but I was too busy wasting time to do anything that productive at that
point.
I almost had Minix-VMD (that's the VM utilizing one, right?) working, at one
point, but kind of got distracted again. I probably would've been with Minix a
lot longer on the XT, but wow, 640k limitation? Ugh.
When I get my primary computing iron back online I'm going to try out some of
the old (and newer) operating systems on VMs again; I miss doing that kind of
stuff. :)
That's pretty awesome that you're familiar with (and actively working with)
Minix, though. I really didn't expect to see that. ;)
