It's been a while but I remember having a similar issue using Mageia as my
desktop OS. I added the memory, but the system only recognized some of it,
topping out at either 2 or 3 gigs.
Upgrading to the 64bit kernel was the fix. I've never used Debian so I can't
give accurate instructions. I would *think* it's a simple matter of installing
the correct kernel from the software manager. That's basically what I did. Of
course I'd recommend backing up anything you don't want to lose since it is a
kernel upgrade. They have become rather painless over time, but you still don't
want to take chances.
