On my box gmake is a symlink to make. I can use either one.
Are you following the instructions at..

That is how I got up and running. What happens when you run make? I started
with the quick installation from CVS, downloaded the GNUMakefile and ran "make
install SYMLINK=1 RELEASE=1". That downloaded and built everything, I just
needed to start my configuration after that.
