Yep, get a fast modem and you had to upgrade your serial card. :)

And before IDE, you had to set all sorts of jumpers on your HDD controller and
drive, then low level format the drive. :)  And you could roll the dice by
trying a MFM drive on a RLL controller to get 50% more space, at the increased
risk of data loss. :)
