Although I had tried Slackware in the mid-90s, SuSE was one of the first Linux d
istros I seriously got into, around 1999 or so. At the time, SuSE had its own co
nfigurator for X that I found to be more successful at detecting my video hardwa
re and its valid settings, so I was able to get XFree86 running fairly easily wi
th SuSE. Also, it had a fairly large repository of included software (and from
what I remember, it was one of the earlier distibutions available for DVD-R, whe
reas most other distros at the time were on a CD or two).
Eventually though, its X configurator didn't work so well anymore, and I moved o
n to other Linux distros. I found similar problems with other Linux distros aro
und that time, where one version would work fairly well but the next version wou
ldn't. It seems like most Linux distros these days don't really have that issue
.
