Yes, I remember having to configure "modelines" and stuff like that in
an X config file. Not much fun as I recall... I think I always did it
just with an editor though, don't remember any configurators. And yes,
that isn't a thing any more, I guess X itself is more able to detect the
hardware and adjust to it automagically.
