Should be more of this.  I first learned IP through running it on packet radio.
 I'm one of a small number of people who have been able to follow a TCP
handshake in real time (pretty easy at 1200bps half duplex!), to see how it
works. :)  Coincidentally, around the same time, we studied the theory for IP
at uni, so I was doing the theory, then going home and putting it into
practice.  This was back in 1991, before Internet was readily available in
Australia.  Even at uni, I didn't have an account.

That experience gave me a good early grounding in IPv4 and related protocols.
