my family always kept their records in a dry cold dark place, and they kept the
jackets on them. record players always had the glass or plastic covers
protecting the playing surface from dust and dirt.
i played my grandmother's records and i dont recall any annoying pops either.
i dont recall any sound artifacts except perhaps when there was 'silence'
between songs or the beginning or end of a record and that wasnt that bad.
what i do remember is how warm the sound was from records.
