Meh. I was hoping for more.
Positives: the acting, cinematography, sets/scenery, special effects. This is a
very visually appealing show that seems to accurately capture the atmosphere of
the region. If you're going to watch it, don't read any more as I likely would s
poil some things for ya.
Negatives:
1. The famously hard to understand newfoundland accent has been replaced with a
pseudo Irish accent includinhg over the top pluralizations of singular words and
overuse of terms like "b'y" (for boy). I found it distracting, though humorous
at times. They sounded nothing like the newfies I've heard (any Skote Outdoors f
ans here?) and they were very inconsistent (the siblings don't sound anything li
ke each other), but at least the characters (some of them) had some kind of uniq
ue accent, I guess.
2. Dead-end side plots. There was just far to many moments where (if you're payi
ng attention), you're like wait... why? What happened to that thing they were ju
st talking about? Things happen that appear to be foreshadowing, maybe something
cool and then nothing comes of it (e.g. the egg/freezer scene). Or too much is
made of stupid side plots that have zero impact on the overall story. Some chara
cters and their side plots could've just been edited out and the series would've
been better (like the boyfriend from Montreal and the debt collector turned bes
tie?). Why did everyone just magically get over their infection? What of the cir
cular back-scar? How'd the hag teleport herself to Wade's room and steal the rin
g? Maybe they were intentionally leaving unresolved/explained side plots for a f
ollow-up season? Didn't seem like it.
3. One dimensional villains with campy/unclear/contradictory motives. I did thin
k the OceanGate reference was kind of funny but everyone would've died. Immediat
ely. Also, the Cocker company wants the monster there/alive or they don't? They
go back and forth from one sentence to the next.
4. Everyone seems to drink the "bad" (smelly slimy) ice and not notice anything?
Some get sick, some don't. Linda says that Steve (the rich explorer dude) didn'
t drink anything, which "was weird", but we clearly see him drinking when he buy
s Calvin a drink just a moment before.
5. Lastly, physics. If you're going to tow a house across the water, you'd need
flotation and balance - the scene looks great, but makes no sense. And if you're
going to sheer off huge chunks of an iceberg, you'd need more than a small cali
ber bullet.
Did you watch it and if so, what'd you think?
