Because I personally hate that word. I hate what it means to nearly
everyone else. It's a word that means 'second class'.
You may try to alter it's meaning (as did another poster with the words
'gay' and 'fagot') But they are words that convey hate.

Not all do, and many wont. If they want to, it doesn't change my usage.
Nothing comes to mind as a 'white' slang. Perhaps 'craker'? Doesn't
convey hate to me and is a poor simile...

If you really respect your black friends, you'd find another word to
use. I seriously doubt they understand your views as being totally
benign.

perception that is the deciding factor.

Did you ever see/read the work, 'Black Like Me'?
A journalist takes some medication that causes his skin to darken. In
the movie, he looks black.
He tells of his life afterwards. Things changed for him, just because
of his skin color. Same man. Different reactions. Of course the blacks
that he met treated him differently also. It works two ways. No one is
exempt. It may not be an issue in a homogenous enviroment, but it's
there nontheless, just below the surface.
Perhaps it has survival benefits. Beware of anyone not of our clan.
Different is dangerous. But we don't live in tiny groups any more.
Attitudes can change. I hope so anyway.
